Initially we had 124 players scheduled to play this upscale course but during the interim 17 players dropped out for various reasons leading the over-worked Randy Pratt to invent some new words out of the frustrations caused by the job. Those few of us who are very familiar with all the work that goes into this task can really sympathize with him and maybe help him come up with some new words to describe these frustrations. Please, please if you know you can't make it to the outing you've committed to let Randy know as soon as possible e.g. if your great aunt Harriet twice removed has decided to pay an unannounced visit to your home at least tell her to hold off until your obviously more important golf game is complete.

Bottom line, make Randy's job a lot easier by trying not to cancel one or two days before tee time! I've got the final pairings sheet for Winghaven right in front of me and it looks like he used up at least one highlighter making #$%^&*!!! corrections to the carefully prepared sheet.

Randy's taking off tomorrow to drive to Colorado for a family affair (I believe a great, great grandchild is getting married, or something to that effect) so he won't be here for Thursday's Whitmoor event. I sure hope he returns rejuvenated - let's just hope he returns. In the meantime a couple of novices will be handling all the things that Randy does so be patient at the end of the round and have a few rounds while we sort things out.

Now, on to golf. This is a marvelous course, excellent condition and certainly not an easy venue. The fairways were immaculate, tho understandably not driveable, and the greens were superb. The rough was just that - tough, rough, and quite thick. The tee boxes were excellent, what more can we say. Even the weather, tho a bit misty at times, was cooperative.

The only complaint we could muster was that it seemed we were caught up in a computer game that had gone awry. The next round I play in a "Smart Cart" will be way too soon. The start was straight out of a Keystone Kops movie. Some announcement was made about re-starting our on-board screen by flipping the switch on the back of the screen. Having finally located the well-hidden switch the screen seemed to come back to where it had been before and we were stalled with almost nowhere to go. Backing up worked, they had told us it would re-set things in the computer, or some such myth. When we then switched to the forward mode our heads were thrown back by the fierce acceleration to .015 mph in the parking lot. Once we broke the magic barrier of the parking lot invisible fence the cart took off like the proverbial naked ape. Looking back, it appeared not everyone was as lucky as us to escape the confines of some mystically controlled electronic fencing system.

We were also told that it was cart path only (on this course, oh joy!!) and that if we strayed off the cart paths the cart would shut down never to move again until the computer golf police came and rescued us. Not a day for those of us who feel we have to drive right up to the greens to complete our games. Anyway, the computer-controlled day on the course was just a bit off-setting and perhaps had just a bit to do with the lousy way yours truly played - nah, not a chance.

'Nuff of the up front stuff, how about the results, eh?

Results:Playoff hole was #16 - darn, can't remember that one, probably one of our bogey holes since we didn't cash.

Flight "A"

In First was the Ed Boyer, Kevin Walsh, and Dan Snowden threesome who fashioned a -12(60) on this venue. Not sure what happened to his feats but he was not in the running by the end of the day.

At this time I'd like to pay tribute to one of our own who passed away over the weekend. Not everyone will remember him but Libby Lanning was a special person who left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He loved this game and loved to share its nuances with all who'd listen. Years ago, when I used to give most players nicknames, I dubbed him Libby the Lip because he always had something to say about just about anything. Keep on sayin' those things Libby, I'm sure the Big Guy will lend an ear. Hit 'em straight old friend.
