116 of us gathered at the Missouri Bluffs golf course on this almost picture perfect day. After sweltering through the summer heat/humidity this day was a very welcome adventure for those of us who think we know how to play this game. We do, don't we?

I'd like to thank all who played for being on time with the correct amount of money, etc. for a smooth sign-in process in the AM. It makes for a very sane time at check-in if folks arrive in time for the workers to at least catch their collective breath before heading to the first tee. Of course we did have to wait until the course management was ready to drop the green flag to send us on our way and the almost inaudible announcements made by them was another issue. But we did get to the first tee on time.

Very few of you are aware of this, but yesterday at the weekly Wolf Hollow 2-man scramble the situation was just the opposite. The night before said scramble a horrible accident on I-44 had literally closed the road down between the Gray Summit exit and the next west bound exit causing all traffic to exit the often busy hiway. Yours truly was stuck in that line of traffic for an hour between the Pacific exit and the Gray Summit exit. Thoughts of not playing at all raced through my head, but there was no place to get off the hiway but the Gray Summit exit and once I reached there I might as well continue on highway 100 to the golf course.

I did this and arrived at about 0800, half an hour after the scheduled start of the scramble. But, a lot of folks were in the same pickle so management decided to send the bulk of the attendees off at 0815 and the stragglers to go off when they arrived. My partner, Jack Panula, arrived about 20 minutes after me and we decided to await another couple of guys who are permanent fixtures at the scramble. Well, they didn't show, having been caught up in the same mess on 44. So, Jack and I went off on the closest hole, many minutes after the rest of the field had gone to their appointed holes. Ironically, Jack and I finished the 18 ahead of all but 2 teams!! And we played astonishingly well to boot. Not sure what this proves but it gives my keyboard some exercise.

For some reason, known only to the Bluffs Management, we were relegated to the outdoor pavilion, perhaps maybe the words Riff Raff were emblazoned on some of our caps, who knows. Anyway, we managed the outdoor checkin in amazing fashion and as a reward their snack bar might've suffered in the process. At least we got to use their indoor facilities - at least I think so because I sneaked in at the end of the round to get rid of some used water.

Course comments; the fairways were great, just great, at least in this choppers opinion. The greens were subtle but not pristine. A lot of their members evidently don't possess fancy ball mark repair tools because they sure don't know how to use them. The rough was ok, I guess. Our foursome was very fortunate to not have to play from there because if we hit errant shots they were really errant, not just in the rough but in the forest surrounding the rough. Speaking of our foursome, we played quite well missing only one green in regulation and that miss was only a measly foot off the putting surface.

Ok, ok, you've read enough of the fluff. Here are the results; oh yeah, the playoff hole was #18, the roller coaster par 5 that ends up hill to the top of Mt. Everest.

In First was the Jim Frost, Steve Smith, Joe Pfeifer, and Ernie South team at -2(69)

In Second was the Stephen Venker, Pick Williams, Lee Readus, and Jerry White team at -2(69). Just a note here; an additional team shot the -2(69) score but misplaced their scorecard so we couldn't count the score because of verification. Remember, it is the team's captain's responsibility to turn in the scorecard, and the captain is the first person listed in the foursome.

In Third was Lee Hanson, Rick Hartman, Dee Ridenhour and Frank Vien team at -1(70)

In Fourth was the Doug Torrie, Jerry Kent, Ken Knarr, and Roger Nikrant team ,busy rounding up their sisters for a big kiss at the end of the round for their even par, 71, score.

The Larry Willman team also shot the even par score while the Don Moschenross team and the Rick Bonnot team fashioned a +1(72) score. The Tom Prinzi team took home the coveted pink ball set and the amazing $8 prize for the high score of the day (73).
