We didn't quite make the triple digit level this time as just 99 of us showed up at Gateway National just in time to tee off at an earlier than usual 0730 green light-head-to-your-first-tee start time. The course must've had something special planned for the rest of the day because for some reason the inside of the clubhouse was not open for us when we finished our round. Luckily, Randy comes with a fully charged laptop so our patented, sophisticated, state of the art scoring program can be processed without the need for a normal outlet.

Whilst coursing the course yours truly had an interesting time with his cell phone. Assuming those of you who carry cell phones can always tell when an incoming call arrives on the phone and the display lights up telling you at least what the phone number is, and if you're lucky enough to have that person in your address book, the number will have that name associated with the number. Now I get an annoying number of calls from all over the states, not associated with names in my address book and I just assume those numbers have been hi-jacked from some old phone number data base that's been unintentionally made available to any hacker that wants to take the time to steal said number(s). Each time I get a call from said number I dutifully block the number from ever calling me again. Do you guys do this?

Anyway, as we were playing some non-descript hole on this course I heard my phone ring. I stuff it in my golf bag so it doesn't possibly interfere with my less-than-perfect swing. Hustling over to the bag I retrieved the phone from one of the side compartments and looked at the number emblazoned on the screen. What do you know, my %^*#ing phone was calling itself!!!! Recently I've received calls from local numbers but when they're not in my address book I just ignore them and consequently block them. But this time was different. This time my phone called itself. Strangely enough it didn't identify the caller as being me, but instead said the call originated from Winchester, Missouri. Another puzzle; I live in Manchester!

I received two more calls from myself after the round so when I got home I called my carrier, ATT, and asked for an explanation. The lady said she'd never heard of such a thing although she coined the phrase "phone spoofing" as a description of the activity that I'd suffered through. And she did give me an aid that could/might preclude receiving such prank calls in the future; an App called ATT Call Protect. I've since downloaded this App and hope it shuts off calls from myself. Also, as further protection I've blocked myself from calling me. I'll show me!!

Now, onto comments about today. This course plays pretty long. If you're on your putting game, especially the 30-80' putts you can do ok. Approaches are key and getting the ball fairly close to the hole is especially key. Our foursome only missed two greens in today's effort but every putt was long, long, long. And, being 75+ was not necessarily an advantage today. One keen observer of the game opined that on 9 holes, exactly half the number of holes on an 18 hole course, the coveted red tees were even with the yellow tees. What kind of an advantage for old farts was that?? There was a time on the course when I considered calling my parents for a refund on my birthing since it really didn't make much of a difference to be old. Oh well.
