Sept 27,2018

A packed house of 121 golfers made it to Aberdeen on a chilly morning that actually turned out quite nice, in fact very, very nice. For sure I've never played this course when it wasn't windy, but Thursday was the one exception - no wind!!! And that's especially good on hole #12, that interminable par 4 that's always, always into a gale. Didn't help us tho, we bogeyed the darn thing.

Anyway, they told us at the beginning that the course was in very good shape. They absolutely were not lying. This was the best shape yours truly has ever, ever seen this course and I've played it fairly often. Usually they shave the fairways so they look more painted than grassy. On Thursday the ball actually sat up just a tad so us hackers could simulate getting the club underneath the ball. Some of the pros among us, I won't mention their names, probably don't mind tight lies but I personally don’t care for hitting the big ball first because that darn thing doesn't move very far when you're busy swinging for the fences.

And the greens were excellent, although gravity seemed to affect them on many occasions forcing our perfect putts to go astray horizontally instead of vertically. They were just a smidge on the shaggy side but still ran pretty true and looked very good. Not a lot of ball marks either and when there were the marks they were easily fixed because of the softness of the surface.

Before we started we were treated to something a bit spectacular. One of our own, Calvin Britt to be exact, dropped in from the sky on a pre-planned surprise jump, with a chute mind you, to start off the festivities. Thanks so much Calvin. If anyone caught pictures of him please send to me and I'll forward to the group after the next outing. Actually, Randy and I missed the whole thing as we were cleaning up after registration, but we knew it was coming. My concern was that Calvin got the right course since there are three of them in close proximity and we wouldn't want him to land at Pevely Farms by mistake and miss his tee time - great job Calvin. He's been trying to get me to go up with him and get crazy enough to plunge out of a plane at 300,000 feet to safely land somewhere. The first rung on a step ladder makes me dizzy.

Results : Playoff hole was #16, that dinky par 3 that Ron Muse probably used a 76 degree wedge to win CTP. BTW Academy sports has a 76 degree wedge if you're interested!
