The first outing of the year at The Bluffs was an unqualified success (whatever that means). We had 117 show up for our usual 0800 tee time and some 5-6 hours later we finished. All appeared to have a good time. For those that didn't, there'll be many more outings for you to hone your games to the fine tuned spectacle you all know they can become. Fortunately the weather held up and it was a rather gorgeous day. April can be a real challenge as we all know.

The course was in good shape for this early in the season, and you could tell they'd gotten a recent shower or two because of the squishiness factor on some of the fairways. The golf balls were just too heavy for the soft fairways and would tend to sink in upon landing, creating minimum roll. This already long course played a good 3000 yards longer than normal. Our intrepid foursome probably managed to hit 4 greens in regulation due to lack of an extra 20-30 yards of roll on our drives, etc. (need some excuse, eh?)

And, due to those early spring phenomena known as aeration and sanding half the greens were an adventure prompting the committee to make the decision we all don't like to make; the 2-putt rule. After your first putt you can pick up and add a stroke, pretty much regardless of where you are on the green which makes for a new interpretation of the "gimme" concept. Our foursome used the rule less than a handful of times, but it did come in handy for that handful. We had to be careful, however, because several times we "putted" from the fringe, which is not a putt in reality but a stroke nonetheless, so we had to make sure we were close with those "strokes". Anyway, we abided by the rule and survived the day.
