Somehow your esteemed committee, and the fact that we play on Thursdays, picked a perfect day to play. This time the weather fully cooperated and we all played 18 holes without any interference from above. However, many of us probably could've used some help from above with our games. But, you know what, if we all played as we would've liked to play we'd be in the wrong group of folks and there'd be a lot more $$$ at the finish line. Be that as it may, we managed to field 113 players for this fine day and we played on a venue that was in very good shape.

I don't think I've ever seen Eagle Springs in this good shape. Perhaps it's time of year but for whatever reason the course was in excellent shape for as much play as it gets. The fairways were not cut to within a micron of their life and the greens were not pock-marked by either the aeration machines or unfixed ball marks. But, I will say this about the greens, and a good friend brought it to my attention; the greens are not completely one-grass uniform, if you know what I mean. There are areas on the greens that seem to have different varieties of grass that can affect the roll of the ball, either slowing/speeding it down/up, or deflecting it just the slightest. I'm convinced these factors led to our foursome somehow idiotically missing a very short putt on #8 after an inspirational tee shot to within near-gimmee range by Mr. Livingston Sykes. Ah, such are the rewards of this game (actually it's a skill and perhaps that's where we fall just a tad short!)

Anyway, enough of the pontification and observations/complaints. We all had a very good time and as a group hoped the weather could repeat itself for the rest of our grueling season.

And for those purists who can't remember the playoff hole selection which is randomly generated by computer s/w manhandled by none other than Randy Pratt; the hole was #12, that mere 390 yard, uphill devil of a hole that the antiques got to knock 100 yards off of with the placement of the front tees.

Flight "A"

Topping out this flight with a sterling -10(62) and in First was the Ron Ruffin, Mark Bryant, Ernie South, and Bob Pankey team. I can only imagine Ernie South salivating at the prospect of the front tees being $%^&# near 1000 yards ahead of the whites. What an advantage. Great shooting guys .

Next in order of where they finished via the SCP all at -6(66). In Second was the Larry Knopfel team. A special note here; Larry, did your team play the par 3 course by mistake? Wow, what a score.

In Thrid was the Ed Boyer team.

In Fourth was the Ron Muse squad.

Also in A flight but out of the money were the Tim McCullen team, the Tom Prinzi team, and the John Shetterly team all in at -5(67). The Darryl Rue team and the Bill Heidbreder team finished with 68's.

Flight "B"

Every team in this flight managed a -3(69)

In Firstvia the SCP was the Doug Torrie team.

In Second was the John Boyd team.

In Thrid was the Frank Greening team.

In Fourth was the Dan Pfleger team.

The Dennis Meade team also shot the 69 but didn't fare so well when it came to the old eliminator, the SCP.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flight "C"

The top four teams in this flight each shot -2(70) .

In First proclaimed by the SCP was the Kerry Rockwell team.

In Second was the Ed de la Pena team.

In Thrid was the Jim Dwyer team.

In Fourth was the Bert Schott team.

The Calvin Britt team, the Dan Edmiston team, and the Lewis Rosenbaum team all shot 71's, while the Dave Page team and the Bob Edwards team came in at sister kissin' even pars.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flight "D"

In First was the Dale Crittenden team with a +1(73).

In Second was the Jack Panula with +2(74).

In Thrid was Pierre Sans Souci team +2(74).

In Fourth was the Jim Zweifel team with a 75.

That leaves two teams with identical +4 scores to vie for the Effort of the Day (EOD) award. And winning the SCP for that distinction was the George Blaney team. However, losing the SCP meant winning actual money for that effort and that reward went to none other than perennial money winner Larry Willman and those faithful enough to hang with him. Congrats on that Larry and company.
