Whither summer?? OMG what was that yesterday?  One term that has stuck with me over the years is a description of cold, and I'm sure many of you have your own descriptions that you've learned throughout the years, but this one is memorable for me: colder than a well diggers ass.   I'd say pretty apropos for yesterday, eh?  But yet there were still folks out there in shorts - for some reason.

Anyway, beyond the climatic conditions we did manage to play 18 on this windswept course named aptly after the Scottish tundra.  I think it was just a good thing that there was no moisture in the air for the round, altho it wouldn't have been in the liquid variety in my opinion.

Enough about the air, how about the ground?  The fairways were very nice, playable in fact.   The short rough was ok, not real uniform but certainly ok.  And then there is the jungle off the rough.  I'm sure the tall stuff conceals what could only be called an over gaggle of lost balls.  Who in their right mind would chase after lost balls in that stuff?

And then there were the greens.  Really no words come to mind to describe them.  We all witnessed them.  Worst of the year, or should I say they'd have to get a lot better to be considered the worst.  OMG.  I really think the groundskeeper just sprayed green paint on a once-level surface that resembled a piece of swiss cheese.  I've never seen so many unrepaired ball marks.  Any putt over 3 feet was a real adventure because you couldn't predict the true roll of the ball.   It took many different paths around, over, and through various obstructions to arrive at what one hoped was the intended target.   That's our excuse and we're definitely sticking with it.

At the end of the round you may have noticed we were taking just a bit longer to come up with the results which are normally done at fairly close to lightning speed because they're generated by the laptop computer carefully guarded by Randy Pratt. Well, wouldn't you know it we had a computer "glitch".  It really wasn't a glitch but a well-designed conspiracy fostered by none other than Microsoft Corporation.   It seems Windows 10, the present operating system on the laptop, and many folks' home computers, just had a massive update that takes more than an hour to process.  Sneakily, while Randy had the computer at home, all the data for the update was downloaded without his knowledge and per Microsoft's plan for the update, the next time the computer was turned on the update would kick off.  So, when Randy turned on the computer after the round, sure enough the good old update kicked in and there we sat, helpless until the thing finished its devilish task.  Had we waited for the completion it would've been possibly an hour and a half later - way too long for this crowd.

Enter the day's savior in the name of Jack Eckhard.  BTW Jack designed the software we use for both the pairings and the scoring and we really can't thank him enough for both those labor saving programs (macro-driven Excel s/w for anyone interested).   Anyway, Jack and two lackies set about sorting all the scorecards by low to high score and within those scores by low to high score on the playoff hole, and ensuing holes if there were ties.  Then we consolidated the scores into the four flights that we normally play to.

On top of that he came up with an idea to generate a playoff hole. Normally the computer does this with a random number generator, but of course in the meantime our computer was merrily crunching away at the software update (by this time we were an amazing 24% through the update!!)  Anyway, Jack's method for generating the playoff hole was to make it as objective as possible and instead of asking someone to come up with a number between 1 and 18 (which would've been biased for reasons I'm sure you can imagine) he pulled one of his assorted $20 bills from his wallet and picked the first number, or two, from the serial number and came up with the magic number 9 for the playoff hole.  Voila`, we had all we needed for the results to be tallied and reported.  Many thanks Jack, you saved the day.
