The first taste/blast of Fall descended on us yesterday when we teed it up at the course in northeast north county. 'Twas a beautifully sunny day but the sun was accompanied by a lot of cool air and some breezes - a bit testy at times. Amazingly quite a few players turned up in shorts and even some short sleeves. The cold probably was the cause of so many being dressed in blue from the knees down. All except Dan Edmiston, whose heavily tanned legs overcame any chance of them turning blue with the sub-arctic conditions. Way to tough it out Dan.

The course was in excellent shape, perhaps the best I've seen it. The greens, although just a tad on the slower side, were wonderful, not always cooperative wrt our putting efforts, but yet wonderfully maintained. The layout has not changed, but it probably should. Number 2 is an enigma. It can't even be called a golf hole in many players' minds. I heard that at one time there were 10 carts (5 teams) lined up on the hole in various positions. One deterrent is the fact that, what has seemed like forever, you cannot drive out on the fairway and instead have to walk a considerable distance to your ball. The other is not knowing where the team ahead of you might be and having to drive to a vantage point to observe their progress. The second issue is it's just a lousy design with a 90 degree, short dogleg to a severe dropoff. If it were a long par 3, from the upper tier, that would work. Another suggestion, if we play here again, is to just give everyone a 4 on the hole and move on to the next tee. That sounds very reasonable. (and then we heard some interesting news; there is a possibility that this course may close in the near future - after all the place does resemble a well-kept ghost town).

And before the results, I want to address a separate issue. Some of you may have witnessed my rather heated exchange with one of our players yesterday. The issue was the fact that this player would be playing with one guy two weeks in a row and wondered why and why wouldn't that be corrected. I told him that the computer randomly generates the pairings and I don't have time to go through all the 25+ teams to see if someone has played with someone else two weeks in a row.

Sorry for that rant, but perhaps I've been doing this too long (estimates are 10-12 years) and it's getting to me. I've approached other folks about doing the pairings, but unfortunately none of them seems interested. If anyone out there is fairly computer savvy and wouldn't mind spending "several" hours a week preparing/distributing/amending the pairings for 26 outings per year, please contact me.

Personally, what I'd rather be doing is just this, a post outing description of what happened on the course. I'm much more suited to this effort than I am the bookkeeping end of things.
