Somehow the golf gods were smiling upon us on Thursday. The weather was just about perfect for the 115 of us that came to this lowland course surrounded by multi-million dollar homes perched on the encompassing highlands. This may have been the first time I've ever played this course, and I've played it many times, that the wind was not blowing in our faces on some of the longer par 4's. It was just a great day to tee it up. Then again, when isn't it a great day when you tee it up, eh?

The course was in fantastic shape. The fairways were most noticeably just about perfect and the greens were not far behind. The management should be proud of its condition and I'm hoping someone related that to our hosts. I'm guilty of not doing it but I'm sure some of our more thoughtful members passed on this praise to the people who see to it that we have an enjoyable day. In the past when I've played here they've managed to cut the fairways within a micron of the ground surface making pure ball contact difficult for the average duffer. But Thursday they showed us some reasonable logic and gave us some grassy cushion between ball and dirt. Again, kudos to them.

As for playing, the results, although not spectacular, did show some excellent efforts on the course. The lowest score was a -9 and the highest was a plus 4. Not a bad spread considering this course can play tougher than it looks. Our foursome committed one of the mortal sins of the scramble format; we birdied the first two holes we played. Hot starts like this often lead to disappointment along the way. And we didn't disappoint - the birdie splurge was followed by quite a few mundane pars and a fortunate spattering of a few more birdies that led to a semi-wonderful round that didn't produce anything in terms of monetary reward. Such is golf.
