This was one of our better days, weather-wise, in a long time. We got no last minute player changes because of impending weather, cold or wet, and things went very smoothly at both check in and check out (so to speak). By the time I arrived in the morning, right around 0653, quite a few folks had already checked in and three of the committee were up to their you-know-whats in money and record keeping. I bring the official sign in sheets so those guys had to make due with a rudimentary method of checking off those that arrived at an earlier time. They did just fine with what they had. I'll just have to inform my carpool that we'll have to leave quite a bit earlier next time. I'm sure they'll enjoy that bit of news. It might not bother them tho, they're already asleep by the time we pull out of the car pool lot anyway.

Don't know how many of you can recall this course from two years ago, but at that time it seemed quite ratty to us. The fairways were in bad shape and the greens were no eye pleasers either. Wow, just wow, what a change. The fairways, though not lush and full had at least enough grass on them so the ball could sit up in some kind of fashion. And they hadn't cut them to within an eighth of an inch of their lives like other courses we've seen. And what more can you say about the greens? Those things were a marvel. The Legends last week had great greens but I think these were just a bit better. Hardly ball-marked at all and manicured to near perfection. They may have been just a tad slow, but surely not bad at all.

All in all, I thought the course was in great shape and certainly needs a second look by the committee for inclusion in next year's schedule. And you absolutely could not beat the price. $31 for 18 holes with a cart, unbelieveable. And $5 of that is our extortion fee for the prize fund!

I had the honor of playing with Ernie South and Harvey Ruth (and Ted Isringhaus too) and it was quite a thrill listening to those two curmudgeons discoursing on their interpretation of the rules as this group sees them. It took them several holes to come to an agreement on some disagreement about proper Closest-to-the-pin marker placement on the green, etc. Naturally it made no difference in the end because some sharpshooter came along later and blew that marker away. Other than the entertainment value, it really made no difference to neither Ted nor I as to where the CTP marker was placed WRT to the actual position of the ball, just so it wasn't closer to the pin. But again, it was fun listening them argue over the perceived discrepancy.

The only concern I had during the whole round was playing with Ernie and his reputation for somehow accumulating extra balls and clubs for his vast collection of golf memorabilia that he has salted away in some storage facility in West County. At one point during the proceedings he manage to use that immortal line on me, "let me use your driver once". Of course I obliged, but I have to admit that thing was on a mighty short leash during his brief encounter with it. It absolutely did not leave my sight and it's firmly ensconced in my bag once again. Also, I'm pretty sure I have most of the balls I started with, and in fact I think the only one I lost was an errant shot into a pond in front of a par 3. I definitely did not see Ernie go in after it and calmly slip it into his pocket.

In First with low score for the day, and a dandy one it was, came off the clubs of the Bill Heidbreder, Bill Gust, Tom Murphy, and Max Saunders team. They manufactured a -10(62) on this not-so-easy layout. Congrats guys.

In Second was the Bob Edwards, Ed de la Pena, John Dierker, and Jerry White squad with a -7(65). This is not too difficult to believe with Mr. de la Pena taking advantage of the red tee placement today. Holy cow, that must've been a 2000 yard difference, eh Ed?

In Third was the John Prather, Bob Checkley, Frank Greening, and Tom Wulf team with a smooth -6(66).

Also with a 66, but out of the money because of the playoff hole (#7) was the Phil Helm team.

Three teams tied with -5(67): the Bill Howell team, the Ted Isringhaus team and the Wayne Lamborn team.
