A toasty August Thursday welcomed us to one of our favorite courses this morning. A final tally showed that 103 of us showed up for the opening tee-off on what proved to be a not nearly breezy enough day. The humidity quickly settled in on us soon after our initial swings and never really left during the whole outing. The fancy moisture-wicking shirts got a real workout on this day and will prove to be a nice test for the laundry when it's their turn. What little breeze there was proved to be a god-send but it wasn't nearly enough, nor was it constant enough. Those of us fortunate enough to play the front nine as the last nine at least had some comfort with the shade on most of the holes, while those of us who started on the front nine had to compete on the back nine at the end, the nine with the fewest trees. But somehow 103 guys made all 18 holes and no one was left on the course panting for water and oxygen.

The course was in absolutely wonderful shape. The fairways were immaculate and not cut to within a micron of their life, while the greens were very, very nice and uniform. Now that's kind of a compliment that needs at least some addressing; the greens, though lush and nearly void of ballmarks proved exceptionally slow. They looked good because they'd been cut a tad long. But long means slow and they certainly lived up to that reputation. There is nothing wrong with this concept it's just that it takes many, many holes to get used to really whacking the ball to get it to the hole. I'm not convinced our team ever learned that lesson for the day.

Players: 103

Playoff hole: #10

Flight "A"

In First with a -9 (61) was the Randy Pratt, Tom Braun, Doug Nolte, and George Blaney team. Nothing spectacular for the day except watching Randy go for the pins on some of the par 3's. Our putting was good at times and questionable at other junctures. I'm sure much like any other team on the course.

In Second with a -8(62) was the Joe Jarvis, John Dierker, Charlie Riedisser, and Lee Readus team. These guys fashioned the only skin for the day on that strange hole, #2, when Lee hit one over the trees and landed it on the green maybe 15 feet from the pin from where a teammate promptly sank the eagle putt. Nicely done guys.

In Third with a -7(63) was the Larry Riedisser, Al Rosenberg, Bill Gust, and Tom Fichter team. Didn't hear any miraculous shots being described by the members so I'm assuming they had a workmanlike round and pleased themselves.

Also in the A Flight was a gaggle of teams at the -6(64) score. The Livingston Sykes team, the Joe Cernich team, the Brian Cox team, the John Boyd team, and the Tim McCullen team.
