Sept 26, 2013

A final count of 96 players teed it up during a gorgeous day at Stonewolf. A last minute cancellation by Gene Erard allowed us to create 24 teams of 4 players each, a rare happenstance. Gene is an exceptionally loyal trooper when it comes to these outings, this being only his second missed outing for the year. Whatever the reason for missing this one, we certainly hope he can make the last two of the year.

In addition to the weather being delightful, the course was i n marvelous shape. The fairways were exceptional, perhaps the best we've seen all year and that does not take anything away from the other courses we've played all of which have been in wonderful shape. The greens were a bit soft indicating an abundance of watering, to go along with the lush fairways. It makes you wonder what their water source is since there's no river really close by. But then again it's Illinois and the soil is noticeably richer on the east side of the river.

One interesting incident for us occurred on hole number 16 when a red fox loped across the fairway behind us trailing a distinctive scent of a skunk. He circled our party at a fair distance, traipsed across the green and settled at the foot of a tree above the green to scratch himself, no doubt trying to get rid of the skunk smell. He then disappeared, only to be smelled, but not seen, again on the tee to the next hole. Poor guy must've tangled with a skunk by mistake. Other golfers told me later that they too had smelled a skunk during their round, evidently coming within olfactory distance of the animal who wisely stayed out of sight.
