"And what is so rare as a day in June, then if ever come perfect days. Then heaven tries earth if it be in tune, and over her softly her warm ear lays; whether we look, or whether we listen, we hear life murmur, or see it glisten....."

Hard to ignore the words of James Russell Lowell on a day like this. Today is what the Commish works so hard for when he sets up every Thursday from mid-April to early October; the perfect golf day. Well, you finally got it Larry after 9 tries, 94 of us enjoyed the you-know-what out of it. We just hope the perfect day was not lost on our golfing efforts. It was stupendous and we hope every outing is just a carbon copy of today.

The course was in tremendous shape. The fairways were just right, the sand was good, the rough cooperated and the greens were green. But, the greens were a bit squirrely. If I'm not mistaken the greens were of the polana grass variety which can be a bit cantakerous when trying to manufacture a putt that runs true. Purists might disagree with this assessment but I'll swear in our case the ball did not always track true based mainly on the apparent different directions the grain has a habit of running. Perhaps they were cut a bit long, since they did feel a bit spongy, but they did not always track true to our putting line. That's our excuse and we're definitely sticking to it. Sure, we made some putts that we probably shouldn't have, but the one that really stuck in our craw(s) was the $%^&*ing 2 1/2 foot putt on one of the par 3's that for some reason did not go in the cup for a simple par. I think that "some reason" was the Polana factor. Nuff said, everybody had to putt on those greens, right?

Results:

Flight "A"

First overall in A Flight and at the top of the heap for the day was the Bill Heidbreder, Kevin Claven, Ed Boyer, and John Beal team. Kevin is a friend of Bill's and he came to play a round with the group and watch Bill ply his wares on a golf course. Bill claimed Kevin was going to be his eyes for the day, but we have to wonder if maybe Kevin was another ringer tossed in to the mix cause these guys ran away with the low score for the day at a nifty -8 (63). Very nice shooting guys.

All alone in Second was the Paul Pals, George Eickhoff, Dan Ottoline and Dave Buesse foursome who manufactured a -7 (64) for the day. Paul must've recovered from a severe side muscle pull from last Wednesday's effort at Wolf Hollow when we almost had to call an ambulance to come drag him off the course. And he was my partner then. In spite of the pull he managed to carry me for the majority of the holes.

In Third, by virtue of the scorecard playoff which started on #17, was the Joe Goines, Roger Hennen, Larry Knopfel, and Phil Hess team with a remarkable 65 (-6). Evidently they didn't have to use Larry's 8 yard drive off #13 tee!

The Art Soble team finished next with a tidy 65 also, but not good enough to dislodge Goines' team because of the playoff. Shooting 66's were the Joe Cernich team and the Ed de la Pena team.

Flight "B"

Three teams tied for low score (67) in B flight, but because they birdied the playoff hole, #17, the Joe Jarvis, Jack Eckhard, Bob Pahmeier, and Charlie Riedisser team nosed out the Bob Edwards, Bob Checkley, John Dierker, Doug Nolte team and the Ron Muse, Bob Gay, Jim Hawkes, and Bob Eddy team.

The next 5 teams in B Flight all shot 68's but via the scorecard playoff the order ran thusly; the Jack Panula team, the Ted Isringhaus team, the Don Giarraffa team, the Bob Foeller team, and the Dan Fergus team.

Flight "C"

Three teams finished with 1 under 70's but with the scorecard playoff the Darryl Rue, Russ Wall, Pierre Sans Souci, and Vince Koehr team beat out the Harold Howard, Ernie South, and Joe McDaniels team and the Tom Gill, Bob Fell, Bob Haddad, and Larry Willman team.

Finishing with an even par 71 and lipstick from their sisters was the Steve Dierker team.

The Lou Pessoni, Dennis O'Connor, Larry Riedisser, and Dave Gillett teams all eked out a +1 72 for the day and the Jim Waugh and Dee Ridenhour teams both managed a +2 73 for their efforts.

Next week we're at Emerald Greens and this is the Father/Son affair. Thus far we only have 5 sons playing so there's plenty of room for more if you can convince your son to play, or if he has time. Remember, he's got to be at least 21 and we'd prefer he understand something about golf.
