The last day of Spring seemed like the 45th day of Summer as 95 of us slogged along in the least comfortable day of our outings thus far. Just the day before I was on the road for 11 hours driving back from southwestern Minnesota, through Iowa and northern Missouri and during that time I amassed probably just short of a billion bugs on the windshield. But, I missed perhaps another half billion that seemed to be buzzing around my head during yesterday's outing at Eagle Springs. And they only seemed to bother when I was concentrating on a shot, like in the middle of a backswing, or the middle of a putting stroke. Just then I'd get that annoying whine of a mosquito and of course the ball would careen off in a manner not planned. That's my excuse(s) and I'm sticking to it. Actually, our team played pretty decently and managed a bogey-free round for the day, but not for a lack of trying to get a bogey, if you follow me.

The course was in perhaps the best shape I've ever seen it. The greens were in very, very good shape although as usual the pin placements didn't match our approach shots for some reason. Those guys that re-position the pins each day just don't have the same imagination that we managed to conjure up yesterday - a pity. As proof, two of our 4 birdies came from putts from just off the green. Different size greens would help and especially I think greens made to fit our shot shape would have really improved our game yesterday.

Results:

Flight "A"

All alone in First with an astounding -9 (63) was the Ed de la Pena, Ed Boyer, Bob Meinhardt, and Charlie Riedisser team. If I'm not mistaken here, Mr. Meinhardt was probably all alone on the white tees whilst the rest of his team got the luxury of hitting from the reds and for Mr. de la Pena this is tantamount to a crime. Be that as it may, you still have to get close enough to make the last stroke on the hole for the birdie, which evidently this team did on at least half the holes. Congrats guys.

Finishing Second by virtue of the scorecard playoff (#7) was the Rich Graeff, Paul Scheffer, Harvey Ruth, and John Prather team with a tidy -8. Tied with them was the Bob Stephenson, Don Wulf, Ernie South and Pierre Sans Souci team. Anyone notice Rich Graeff's neon lime shirt? If he'd been paired with Pratt and his neon lemon shirt we could've combined the two for a refreshing drink of something.

Also in with the -8, but failing on the scorecard playoff system was the John Beal team. The Karson Kosowski team finished with a 66 to make the bottom of the A Flight breakout.

Flight "B"

Three teams managed a -6 for the day but because of the scorecard playoff the Doug Torrie, John Tipton, Frank Vien, and Dan Fergus team came in First, nosing out the Randy Pratt, Lou Pessoni, Bob Pahmeier, and Dan Snowden team, and the Joe Pfeifer, Gene Erard, Dave Rapp, and John Boyd team.

Also in the B Flight, and all shooting 67's were the Mark Gordon, Dennis Meade, and Dan Ottoline teams.

Flight "C"

Three teams shot identical 68's to top out this flight. The scorecard playoff declared the Tom Gill, Phil Hess, Bob Pankey, and Al Rosenberg team in First with the Joe Cernich, George Eickhoff, Bob Edwards and Bill Clark team in second and the Bert Schott, Paul Pals, Doug Nolte and Bill Wegge team in third.

Finishing out the C Flight was the Livingston Sykes team (69), the John Dierker team (70), the Art Soble team (70) and the Phil Lucido team (70).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flight "D"

Again three teams vied for First in this flight with a -1 (71) score. The John O'Toole, John Ross, Phil Helm and Larry Willman team took scorecard honors ahead of the John Aubuchon, Larry Riedisser, Earl Phillips, and Bob Checkley team and also the Ron Muse, Dee Ridenhour, Larry Knopfel, and Charlie Fischer team.

Finishing out the D flight and all with scores at even par were the Steve Dierker, Bob Fell, and Jack Panula teams who all had dates with their sisters following the outing.
